Poetry Aloud - May 2010

Colin Whyles's picture

What a bumper month! Fifteen poets and a huge range of topics, from the eight times table to the upright ladies of Nepal (in the proper sense of upright!). Some interesting serendipitous links between poems as well.

Yet again we were regaled by poets we had not heard before. There were five new voices this month. Is everyone in the west of Suffolk a poet? It certainly feels like it. They are all welcome and I hope we hear them again.

It cannot be said that the Poetry Aloud meetings are not surprising and full of interest. With fifteen poets reading up to three poems each we heard over 40 poems. Plus our traditional final song. It was requested that we have a song with a chorus this month so that everyone could join in, and it seemed to me that they did. Excellent. So although we offer you much on this site, just see what you are missing by not joining us!

Cameron came the furthest - from Nepal. Well, he has been back a week or two now and the poems are flowing. Three fascinating poems about his experiences there. He has submitted one of these 'Women of Nepal' which has been posted.

Mentioning only one poet is unfair on everyone else, as it suggests their work was not of the same standard. Not so, everything was of high merit, we would be the lesser without any one of them.

A few poems have been posted and we hope to put many more up in the next week or two.
