Coat of Red Copyright © 06 February 2005 Colin Whyles

I stood to watch the sky
Shed its skin of daytime blue
Put on a coat of red
And slowly close the curtains
To welcome in another night

You came to watch the sunʼs
Volcanic ball of fire
Sink into the gates of Hell
To light once more the flames
That burn your soul
Throughout the night

You stood your back against a tree
Your hair of flaming red
Your cerise coat defied the sun
To light the air
To set a beacon on
The hillside where we stood

Then eyes that caught the red of fire
Caught me in their light of passion
Hair of flame lit a spark
And told me of the gypsy soul
That wandered through your heart

So we stood to watch the sun
Drown in the lake once more
See its raging furnace
Struggle for its breath of life
And set the hills around alight
Begged them to help its hopeless fight
