She believed
in fairy tales,
the transformation,
the prince
coming,
the bride
happy ever after.

She hung
the children’s lives
on this,
ladelling God,
the reward
of the righteous,
into their heads
like syrup.

How could she forget
the axe,
the ogre,
the shallow grave
in the woods?
