In that it begins with two,
a family is defined by
the bond between them;
that which pulls together,
and connects when apart;
a linear, elastic thread.

In that each new life added
is strung and connected by
filaments of emotion,
the family's reach in
two-dimensional space
is extended beyond the third.

In that as each stands as a pylon
supporting the graduated
lines defining familial place,
boundaries are drawn and held;
messages pass furtively inside,
secreted from intrusive gaze.

In that sustenance and comfort
are partaken by preference within,
family life is self-sustained,
whole and complete, ring-fenced;
throbbing its mimicry of
atomic coherence and stability.
