A Flow of Thought © 08 Barry Gardner

The water glistens in the light
Splashing in the pool below
As I gaze in wonder at the sight
Looking downwards at the flow

But I’m not out safari-ing
This water comes from me
Strong and satisfying
As I stand and have a pee

So with the torrent pouring out
To utilise the waiting
My mind goes wandering about
And starts me contemplating

For pretty soon I’ll press the flush
To send it on its way
On its journey through the drains to gush
To where I cannot say

It’s at this point I make the link
Which in my mind’s unfurled
Of horrendous consequence I think
For the future of the world

‘Cos while we so crave to conquer soon
Atrocities like cancer
They plan to colonise the moon
But will that bring the answer?

Our scientists learn more and more
They tell us with aplomb
Of future benefits in store
And then give us the bomb

Most natural disasters
Cannot be stopped its true
But our elected members
Could do more than they do

Perhaps we’ll find help from above
Yet it seems over the years
Religion breeds not only love
But violence hate and tears

Call us civilised? Forgive my mirth
We’re a danger to our health
Man’s the only creature on this earth
That wars against itself

Yet the thought that brings me constant stress
As I ponder on our species
Is they’ll still be talking progress
When they blow us all to pieces
In eternal deadness to remain
Life like my pee gone down the drain

BUT
As I fear the future for mankind
A wondrous thought now springs to mind
How clever I could think all this
In the time it takes to have a piss
And yet I’ve even had the time
To compose this poem in full rhyme
About a minute’s all it takes
Now I’m out of here in a couple of shakes.
