A tree that's growing strong and tall and true
Draws sustenance from deep within the earth
And photosynthesis will help its girth
And generate more rings, refreshing new growth
Powered from without and from within
Birds nest and grow and fly, and insects live upon it
But a climbing plant will give no succour
It will drain and be no kin, but if
a forester can safely graft a living
branch into that ancient frame
It will tap in, draw sap, though not the same
it will adapt and thrive, a valued shaft,
and finding life anew beneath the shade
Will flourish as the others in the glade.
