At last we broke our silence
Too late
Long after silent vows were sworn
To stand alone together
To face the world as one

You spoke about your father
I spoke at length of homeless trails
We spoke of love and family
We told of tales untold

I told of books that told of lives
So strange to make you laugh
You said you had no time to read
You didn’t know when last you had

The sun had risen sharply
Before we’d felt the night
Sleep was long behind us
We walked into the countryside

At last we felt it safe to go
To our separate homes
No-one could come between us
I spent the night alone
In comfort
Easy sleep
