It’s a Triple-Rollover.

The papers say
That the winner
Will be richer than the Beckhams;
(And face it… They will know)

I say

That anyone who has
Read a single poem
By Seamus Heaney
Is richer than the Beckhams.
(Though, in the naming
Of their children
There is more than a hint
Of the metaphysical).

Then follows their
Catalogue of avarice;

You could have~

A string of racehorses,
A stately home,
A holiday island.

Never thoughts for

Hospitals
Schools
A library

Britannia sits on her rock
And weeps;
She’s been bankrupt
Since 2008

(Though any country
That could write
This cheque
To an individual

Has surely been bankrupt
For far longer than that)

How very true!

How very true - as a country we encourage the view that success equates to unearned wealth and unearned fame, then wonder why people riot and help themselves to unearned wealth...
