With heavy heart I have to say
That a friend of mine has passed away
He died, I regret, on New Year's evening
During year-end alcoholic dreaming.
'Midst joyous scenes of laughter and fun
I bid my farewells to the only one
Who picked me up when life laid me low
Or calmed my excessive, exuberant glows.
For fifty years this friend of mine
Supported me nobly through dross and grime
And in times of abject desperation
He proved to be my inspiration.
He had quite remarkable characteristics,
Such as aiding my attempts at journalistics!
He brought clarity of mind, dispelling mental daze
With succinct word and punctilious phrase.
When put on the spot or called to account,
He increased my confidence, kept my feet on the ground.
He enhanced the flavour of beer, wine and tea,
So don't be surprised at this eulogy.
Yet is there no chance of a reincarnation?
If my friend hadn't died it would be my salvation!
His resurrection would be a solution
To silly promise of New Year resolution!
So why say farewell to an erstwhile friend
When I know all the time that it just cannot end!
Who's fooling who with this planning and hoping?
I know all the time that I'll carry on smoking!
