That rare thing,
A person who knows you
Intimately;

Talks about you as if you
Were a well thumbed book,
Always keeps you on their shelf;

Dispenses advice
Without prejudice, knowing that
You may never take it;

Who loves you for the long haul,
Even though you know
You never live up to expectations;

Who reads between the lines,
Who gives you the benefit of the doubt
And reaches into your essential loneliness.
