Reading by Victor Weston

Dedicated to the girl who only wants to hear things she knows.

My memories make me
my memories define me
my memories are me
even the false ones
My memories clothe the path that leads to me
so give me my memories
and only my memories
I am the Play-Us-Something-We-Know Girl
the Don't-Give-Us-Something-To-Learn Girl
the Replay-My-Life Girl
Take me round and around and round again

What is not in my memory
I will spare no memory
how dare you insinuate
novelty on my synapses
you'll make me neurotic
demonic, despotic
thinking is not to my liking
I'm the Don't-Want-The-New Girl
Nothing's-Gonna-Change-My-World Girl
the Sepia-Snapshot-Postcard Girl
fading cracked memories
re-plastered, re-papered
78 Revolutions-Per-Memory

I admit no ascension of memories
no pre-history
no vacuous vacancy no acceptance of existence unformed
a Big Bang event
therefore I am

Don't try to change me
the lady's not for learning
the thought is disturbing
the new is not welcome
I can't know if I'll like it
the old is quite certain
comforting, warming
I'm the Nothing-New-Matters Girl
the Untouched-By-The-Novel Girl
What-Is-Known-Is-Much-Better Girl
the Fairground-Carousel-Whirling Girl
the same song repeating
the same sung refrain

Every groundhog
has its day
