I've been here from the beginning
though you've never heard my name;
it's not that I haven't got one:
at the moment it's Wayne.

I was never in a pulpit,
always in the pews,
happy enough in the stable,
uneasy in The Mews.

I voted for Barabbas, but
could have had Jesus instead.
I agree with the man who spoke last:
that's what I would have said.

I'm the one who shoulders the gun,
pays the tax, the rent;
when the man in the street is mentioned,
I'm the one who is meant.

Let others plan the great design,
dictate each circumstance:
while they compete to call the tune,
I get on with the dance.
