Two Teardrops Fell Copyright © 2009 Barry Gardner
A tear rolled down a cheek one day
What caused it to I cannot say
Perhaps bereavement, pain or grief
Or the questioning of one's belief
Or perhaps someone was cruelly blighted
And left to rue love unrequited
Or a child's play was stopped abruptly
When down he fell and scraped his knee
But let's dispense with idle chatter
Right now the reason doesn't matter
We only know the person's hell
Was captured in the tear as well
And so -
a drop of sadness fell
But I cannot leave you in despair
And end this tale in sorrow here
For men of eminence have observed
All matter is somehow conserved
Thus Mother Nature on her round
Saw the tear upon the ground
And rather than just pass on by
Drew up its nutrients to the sky
Where God or Science - who can know?
Caused a mighty wind to blow
And on a distant fertile plain
Disperse a welcome shower of rain
Which in its turn caused crops to flourish
Providing folk to food to nourish
One of whom within their time
Experienced happiness sublime
Maybe some man then met a wife
To love and cherish all his life
Or found at last a long-lost brother
Or a girl became a proud young mother
Perhaps someone had conquered illness
Or a troubled soul found peace and stillness
The outcome was that pure and clear
Upon their cheek appeared a tear
Once more dispense with idle chatter
Again the reason doesn't matter
We only know the person's glow
Was captured in that tear also
A drop of gladness -
in full flow
So my message here for what it's worth
Is with the turning of the earth
A poor old tear born out of sadness
Is born again a tear of gladness
I guess you think this sounds naive
I'm in the land of make-believe
But lighten up and stop pretending
You know you just love a happy ending
