Reading by Sally Warrell

Fear makes men do strange things.

Once, as I drove him over the moors,
he lurched and clutched
wildly at the wheel,
because a wasp was buzzing round his ear.

Now, as I sit at this man’s table,
scanning the white walls, tiled floor,
looking for comfort,
I listen to his lover’s barbs and stings
and wonder why he stays.

Fear makes men do strange things.
