The air was hot and still
The sun was burnishing the river
All was quiet

Walking by the rivers edge
On green grass
The day was too hot

The explosion of sound
Was shocking
In the quite of a Sunday afternoon

We turned but it was only
A large black dog
Which had belly-flopped into the river

Splashing in the shallow water
Half walking half swimming
Towards the bank

It was chewing on a stick
Its doting owner
Had thrown, disturbing the peace
