Why Was I Born To Be A Fly? Copyright © 2009 Beryl Dyson
Trapped inside a motor car
Quite unintentional, you know,
I journeyed with a family
Who were going to the zoo
No-one seemed to notice me
With all the children in the back
It was the ideal place to be
Each had a luncheon snack
I crept along the window ledge
Flew near the children's feet
I could smell a piece of sausage
A promising, superb treat
Those people paid an entrance fee
When arriving at the zoo
I buzzed out through the window
And didn't pay a sou!
With lots of things to taste and blow
And no need to order lunch
I joined the muddy Hippos
A delightfully smelly bunch
A carcase in the lion's den
Looked an interesting treat
I'd begun to feel quite peckish
And fancied a piece of meat
I flew inside and met the pride
Found a juicy piece of liver
Deposited a blow or two
And quite enjoyed my dinner.
I met more pals, some green, some blue
Near aromas quite divine
For hours and hours we muck around
We had no idea of time
No vehicles in the car park
My free transportation gone
I must find myself some lodgings
Before darkness comes along.
I found a topped-up wheelie bin
Its black lid was open wide
Warm and full of luscious smells
A delicious place to hide.
I was not surprised to find within
Other flies had found this place
Sleep-overs now a common thing
With flies and the human race.
That night, in bin, I learned a lot
From that buzzing townie set
Said to me - a country bumpkin -
"They had more to teach me yet."
They would escort me to Windsor
Where Heads of State reside
Again no need to pay out cash
On a big red bus we'd ride.
My legs and body pristine clean
Eyes and wings all shining bright,
I didn't clean my suction pads
I was told they smelt all right!
Oh, yes, I am a Royalist
Among other things as well
Excitedly I followed them
The traffic - it was hell.
The bus a double-decker
So we made our way upstairs
With no roof not so much danger,
My new friends all declared.
No VIP credentials needed
We fly over the castle walls
Its easy to find the stables
Then we'd settle in the stalls.
Suddenly we all took flight
A soldier with a horse was seen
And a moment or so later
A lady stepped from a limousine.
Boy! Oh boy! We followed her
As she rode into the Park
She sure was a lovely lady
An she stole away my heart.
I settled on the horse at first
Then I dared to touch her cheek
Her perfume it was heavenly
Made my six legs go all weak
Oh! What a time I spent with her
Me, an ordinary fly!!
Maybe that is my great reward
For just being born a fly!
