Heartbeat - Colin Whyles

What drummer plays this other beat
that syncopates the skipping heart
which throbs alone, but made complete
and synchronised by love's old art?

What secret fibrillation thrills
its hidden chambers' suck and pump?
What music echoes through and fills
their every little kick and jump?

This aching vessel, deaf and blind,
will never hear or see its twin,
yet gives its pulse to mark the time
they long and yearn to share within

the beaten rhythm's resonation
through their hearts' reverberation.
