No Inkling

It seemed like a marriage made in heaven,
but they separated thirteen years ago.
Dad stayed put while Mum left. No warning –
out of the blue.  We all know that these things

happen, of course, but happening like that.
It was a shock, and not only for him.
We did just wonder if he would fall
apart, but no – he’s adjusted pretty well

though when I went round, only last week,
it seemed to me I could hear Mum calling
Come on, Podge, it’s been long enough –
you can let go now.  Come and keep me warm.
